Lecture on media coverage of terrorist acts

A lecture on media coverage of terrorist events around the world will be held at The University of Auckland at 6.30pm on 2 March (Engineering Theatre, 20 Symonds Street).

Raphael Cohen-Almagor, Director of the Center for Democratic Studies at the University of Haifa, Israel, will shed light on the intricate relationship between government, media and terrorists, using examples from the USA, UK, Israel, Canada and Germany.

His lecture is entitled "Media coverage of acts of terrorism: Problems and remedies".
He says there have been many instances in which media coverage of terrorist events has been problematic and irresponsible, evoking public criticism and antagonising authorities.

"At times the media has allied itself with terrorists, rather than the government, for partisan or ideological reasons, illustrating the need to develop a set of guidelines for responsible media coverage of terrorist events," he says.

"The media should cooperate with the government when human lives are at stake in order to bring a peaceful end to the terrorist episode."
