LC meeting 16th Feb

In last LC meeting/ lecture bash training session, we and a special guest from Australia, Noelle discussed about what we should include when we try to deliver our message to potential AIESECrs! We discussed three key questions as a group,

1) Why did you join AIESEC?
2) What makes you stay in AIESEC?
3) Things of AIESEC that will attract potential members.
If you didnt come to the meeting, then ask yourself these questions and always keep in mind those things are what make AIESEC different =)

In the end, we concluded three things, Change, Challenge and Development.
Change: powerful impact that AIESEC can have on you, as well as the impact that you can have on others
Challenge: new challenges in everyday life
Development: Personal and Professional development

Personally, I found the meeting particular relevant because it was a good opportunity for self-reflection, which not only helps when we are doing our lecture bashes, but all through our AIESEC life whenever we have to make a "choice".
cool, luv you all!

Lecture on media coverage of terrorist acts

A lecture on media coverage of terrorist events around the world will be held at The University of Auckland at 6.30pm on 2 March (Engineering Theatre, 20 Symonds Street).

Raphael Cohen-Almagor, Director of the Center for Democratic Studies at the University of Haifa, Israel, will shed light on the intricate relationship between government, media and terrorists, using examples from the USA, UK, Israel, Canada and Germany.

His lecture is entitled "Media coverage of acts of terrorism: Problems and remedies".
He says there have been many instances in which media coverage of terrorist events has been problematic and irresponsible, evoking public criticism and antagonising authorities.

"At times the media has allied itself with terrorists, rather than the government, for partisan or ideological reasons, illustrating the need to develop a set of guidelines for responsible media coverage of terrorist events," he says.

"The media should cooperate with the government when human lives are at stake in order to bring a peaceful end to the terrorist episode."

Entrepreneurship in action

Being in AIESEC, many of us are interested in entrepreneurship. Therefore I would urge you all to tune in to an exciting new programme showing on TV on Thursday nights at 8:30pm.

The Dragon's Den shows five business gurus willing to invest alot of capital into just about any idea or anybody. In this new series would-be entrepreneurs pitch their new business ideas and demostrate their prototypes to try and convince the investors that their idea is worthy.

Not only is it tension filled television ,it is also very relevant to those of us wanting to succeed in the business enviroment. Lots to learn and very exciting!

Move over The Apprentice, The Dragon's Den is the HOT new thing.

AIESEC Day

Congratulations to Lama for being selected for national AIESEC day co-ordinator!

After the exposure we got from last years AIESEC day a nationaly co-ordinated effort is going to be fantastic.

AIESEC
Some people might have thought the triangle-cross-circle logo had something to do with Playstation, but last Tuesday in the quad, AIESEC ("Association Internationale des Etudiants en Sciences Economiques et Commerciales") was doing its annual recruitment drive. Free pizza and V aside, after often being the recipient of comments about how useless our degree is and how hard it will be to get a job once we graduate, it is gratifying to hear that there are organisations in the countries all over the world crying out for a new talent.

Wonders of the New Year in Poland!

Greetings from the very cold country Poland!

Only a few days ago, the temperature here was -25degrees. Totally felt my face, hands and legs are going to fall off. Just can't wait till this winter ends. Well lets see, what did I do during this month and Xmas? Alot of things and you might want to read them when you have spare time on your hands.

Xmas

Was invited to a polish family xmas. Very excited about it. Spent about 3 nights with them. I had few wonderful xmas pressies given to me. Totally loved it. Got a bottle of Napoleon Brandy. Don't really know what to do with this as I'm not really a drinker. A few boxes of alcoholic chocolates. hmm... those were better and very nice. :) A book about poland. Loved it. Spent days flipping over the thing. and lastly a cd with polish xmas carols. Havn't played it yet...

Over all the xmas experience was totally awesome. Had the typical polish dishes of carp, fish soup, dumplings, boiled cabage, salad and many more. Also can't get enough of their poppy seed cake. Might try and make it here. Felt like I have eaten a whole cow after the 3 days with them. I have some pictures up on the internet now so click on the link I have sent before and go to my other albums or go to the link that I'll send you later.

New Years

Well on the 27th I went to visit Sandy in Wroclaw. Luckily her flatmates were away and I was able to use one of their beds. The day after that, her friend from Germany came and that night we went skating in an open air skate rink. Wasn't as fun as it sounds as the rink was so rough that I couldn't even skate properly. It didn't help with all these pros wizzing by me.

Well we got a ride from Trojan - an AIESECer from Wroclaw, to a place in the mountains called Kowary. During the ride, we had several failed attempts at creating a singing group. I guess a career as a singer, I will not be in this life time.

We were a bit exhausted when we got there and it didn't help when we found out that we have missed dinner and no one saved us anything. Got bread and cheese instead when we complained to be dying of starvation.

The first day there was really great as we got a chance to go over to Cezh. Republic. Went to a town there and a friend bought some crystal glasses. They are quite cheap here as it only cost her around $50nzd for two sets of crystal wine glasses.

The next day we missed the first and second bus to go skiing, so we tagged along with two others to go sledding down a hill on plastic bags. I had a great time. Got really cold and wet but was really enjoying it. That night we celebrated the new years polish style. In that we missed out on the count down and ate most of the night away. And finally to finish off the new year we each gave cheers for friends and family we have missed back home. A bit depressing...Overall the new year was really great. And after the new years we went back to wroclaw to see the french Opera show Carmen. Totally didn't understand a word but we got a summary info from the net. Kinda fell asleep a few times during the show but was worth the experience.

Ok the month has not end yet so will continue my adventures on my next email sometime next week....

To be continued...

Discuss world issues around the globe

Can you feel AIESEC's global network?

Interesting threads to read are:

Community: Global Learning Networks Forum: 1. General Questions Thread: Cartoons of Mohammed And The Reactions
A discussion around the caricatures of a danish newspaper which upset many people of islamic religion around the world.

Community: Global Learning Networks Forum: 1. General QuestionsThread: Humanitarian Intervension
A discussion on whether humanitarian intervension violates our rights as humans

Learn what AIESECers from all over the world think about current global issues and contribute to the discussions! There's many interesting discussions in the community so make sure you check it out!

Also make sure you are signed up to the Global Members Community
Take a look at the PAI Corner. Here members are asking Brodie, our current President of AIESEC International (PAI) about the global direction, what he thinks about exchange and just advice in general

The LC Reunited! (I know a tad dramatic =p)

Hey Everyone!

Today we finally had the first LC meeting of 2006! Exciting exciting stuff!

The agenda included:
Photo
Icebreakers
Recruitment Overview
Pbox
Support Roles
Here is proof we stuck to the agenda!

The icebreaker was without a doubt the highlight of the meeting =p Not because the other parts were boring, but because it was facilitated by Linda and myself! We played a game of psychologist where the LC had to guess what disease a few people had. By the end of the icebreaker session they LC still hadn't guessed the problem! So I'm looking forward to a continuation of this in the future!

All in all it was an awesome LC meeting. Was great catching up with the people we hadn't seen in ages! I let out a little scream after seeing Vina and Tihana ... but then again that is just me =p

Look forward to seeing more updates soon! Things are happening in Auckland =)
